“The Signature Project”‘s Mural of Secrets Comes to Life

Irish artist Patrick Dunning’s multi-sensory theatrical experience The Signature Project is bringing a mural to life. The show will play through March 25 at the Sheen Center (sheencenter.org).

The Signature Project mural measures 76 feet by 36 feet, and it’s layered with hidden secrets that are brought to life through with traditional Irish music and dance. Choreographed by Elise Wright of the Aherne Sheehan School of Irish Dance, the production will feature a different Irish dancer at each performance.

This production came to life after director Eric Paul Vitale attended a one-night showing of an earlier version of The Signature Project, and began to collaborate with Dunning to innovate the production with actors, musicians and choreography by Melissa Maricich, a two-time National Ballroom champion.

Dunning, a Dublin native currently residing in Portland, Oregon, left his painting career behind in 1992 to begin his mission of connecting over 1 million people around the world with one single piece of artwork. For the past 22 years, The Signature Project has toured throughout the United States, giving audiences a chance to add their own signatures to the collection of more than 300,000 signatures that have already been added to the monumental artwork.

As a result, the show’s plotline (and the painting itself) are constantly changing as more signatures and stories are added, creating new perspectives and ideas that showcase how art, technology, music, and diverse cultures can impact everyday lives. Audiences of all ages have attended the show to laugh, cry, learn and be amazed at Dunning’s ability to explore the human spirit through modern technology and classic Irish artistry.

Performances will be Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., with matinees Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. The production began performances March 8 and will continue through March 25. Tickets can be purchased at www.sheencenter.org or by calling OvationTix at 866-811-4111. Student prices are also available in person at the Sheen Center box office, located at 18 Bleecker Street.
