Wed in the World: Change Is Gonna Come. . . or Is on the Way

The latest on marriage equality around the world. Equality approaches for three iconic islands.

Costa Rica

Their supreme court recently lifted the ban on same-sex marriage, and the Costa Rican Supreme Court struck down the provision that prohibited marriage “between persons of the same sex,” giving the National Assembly 18 months to adopt legislation that recognizes same-sex marriages.

Cuba

Cuba is said to become one of the next countries to approve marriage equality. Homero Acosta, Cuban Secretary of the Council of State, told lawmakers it would “strengthen our project’s principles of equality and justice.”

Indiana

Shelly Fitzgerald, a gay guidance counselor, was recently suspended from working as a guidance counselor at Roncalli High School in Indianapolis, Indiana for marrying her partner, who is also a woman.

Northern Ireland

Labour MP Conor McGinn has recently opened the door for an amendment that would pave the way for civil partnerships and marriages, publicly stating it was time that the government implement same-sex marriages.

San Francisco

Shalita Grant, formerly of NCIS: New Orleans, married her girlfriend Sabrina Skau in a ceremony in San Francisco on August 8. The 29-year-old actress celebrated with a tweet that read captioned, “Love is what matters.”
