NYC Theater’s Awards Season Heats up as Drama Desk Nominations Are Announced

Nominations were announced for the 63rd Annual Drama Desk Awards on April 26 by Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt stars and Broadway veterans Jane Krakowski Tituss Burgess at Feinstein’s/54 Below.

So — in the words of the immortal Regina George — “Get in loser. We’re going shopping,” because the hilarious, so fetch Broadway musical Mean Girls — based on Tina Fey’s 2004 satirical movie about high school cliques — has earned itself a slew of nominations, such as Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical (Grey Henson), Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical (Ashley Park) and The LaDuca Award for Outstanding Choreography (Casey Nicholaw).

Or if you don’t wear pink on Wednesdays, perhaps it’s because “Yer a wizard, Harry!” Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has a nomination for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play (Anthony Boyle). Other nominations include SpongeBob SquarePants and Desperate Measures for Outstanding Musical, in addition to Andrew Garfield for Outstanding Actor in a Play for his role in Angels in America —w hich also stars fellow nominee for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play, Nathan Lane.

The Drama Desk nominees will receive their official nomination certificates at a reception on May 9 at Friedman’s on inside NYC’s Hotel Edison. The award show will be hosted by Michael Urie (watch our video interview with him about his role in Torch Song)is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 3, 2018, at 8:00 PM at The Town Hall in Manhattan.

In order to be considered for a Drama Desk Award, a show needs to have opened on Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway during the 2017-2018 New York theater season.

Founded in 1949, Drama Desk brings critics and writers together in an organization to support the ongoing theater development of in New York. The organization began presenting awards in 1955 and is the only critics’ organization to honor achievement among Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions in the same categories.
