People We Love 2018: Point Foundation

Point Foundation, the National LGBTQ scholarship Fund, made our list of People We Love this year due to its ongoing efforts to help promising LGBTQ students realize their full academic and leadership potential — despite the obstacles often put before them — so that they can make a significant impact on society.

“Point,” says a foundation spokesperson, “works to empower promising LGBTQ students to achieve their full academic and leadership potential – despite the obstacles often put before them – so that they can make a significant impact on society. Point promotes change through education, mentorship, leadership development and community service training, and provides its scholars with the financial ability to attend the nation’s foremost higher educational institutions.”

One of the key ingredients in lifting up a group is making sure that they have the knowledge and experience to better themselves. Toward that end, Point Foundation supports equal access to higher education for all students of all identities and backgrounds, including undocumented students. They described their mission to Metrosource: “Point seeks to foster a greater level of acceptance, respect, and tolerance for all persons in society, and to build a community of socially active LGBTQ leaders.”

Point Foundation raises funds and awareness through a wide variety of events. In the past year, they’ve hosted a National Leadership Dinner in Florida, honoring Pulse nightclub owner Barbara Poma, cornerstone receptions in the Hamptons, Dallas and Miami, a Valedictorian Society reception in Denver, a shopping event in conjunction with J. Crew (with another shopping event scheduled for December 13 at the Beverly Center Bloomingdale’s) – in addition to Taste of Point D.C., Point Honors Los Angeles, A Night on Point Atlanta, and their 2018 Valedictorian Event at Therapy in New York City. The highlight of many Point Foundation events is hearing from the students who have been able to pursue their educational goals in part due to the support of the foundation.

Make way for the next generation of People We Love.
