People We Love 2015: Creators of Fun Home

We love the creators of Fun Home for changing the nature of the musical…

This year’s tony nominees for best musical included two splashy song-and-dance shows (An American in Paris and Something Rotten!) and the Chita Rivera–starring final collaboration of musical theater giants John Kander and Fred Ebb (The Visit). Nevertheless, the award went to a fourth: Fun Home, a smaller, introspective piece in which a woman comes to terms with the homosexuality of both her father and herself. Written by Lisa Kron (book and lyrics) and Jeanine Tesori (music), the piece was adapted from Alison Bechdel’s autobiographical graphic novel about growing up in a funeral home. Despite not possessing the usual razzmatazz of a more traditional Best Musical, the show went on to win four additional Tonys, including wins by Kron and Tesori, which made it the first time in Broadway history the writing awards were swept by women.
