People We Love 2015: Eddie Redmayne

Eddie Redmayne changed what a “Leading Man” can be, and that’s why we love him…

When we fell for Eddie Redmayne as the fresh-faced romantic lead Marius in Les Misérables, we could not have predicted the parade of bold choices that would follow. First came his physically transformative and emotionally devastating performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything for which he won the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. Many might have parlayed such a victory into a role in a lucrative action movie franchise or a heady premium cable series. But Redmayne seems intent on continuing to tell tales of extraordinary transformation. Now, in The Danish Girl, he embodies artist Einar Wegener who, in one of the most significant early true stories of a trans person embracing their identity, ultimately was able to express himself as Lili Elbe. Redmayne’s beautiful, vulnerable performance has left audiences in awe and has tongues wagging about another Oscar nod. Meanwhile, we just can’t wait for his next transformation.
